Film: Sholay (1975)

Say you love me

Interesting Facts:

  • India's first 70 mm, stereophonic sound film. It premiered at Bombay's Minerva theatre.

  • Was about to be removed from cinemas due to low attendance figures but attendance started rising and word of mouth made it the biggest hit of Indian cinema so far with some screens playing the film for several years.

  • The flamboyant Shatrughan Sinha was initially cast for the role of Jai, but Amitabh Bachchan convinced the producers that he was suitable for the role.

  • Danny Denzongpa who was initially offered the role of Gabbar Singh was busy shooting in Afghanistan for Dharmatma (1975). He could not accept the role and the reluctant second choice Amjad Khan got it.

  • Initially, 'Dharmendra' was keen to play the role of Thakur Baldev Singh. He eventually relented when the director informed him that Sanjeev Kumar would play Veeru if that happened, and would get the heroine. Sanjeev Kumar had just then proposed marriage to Hema Malini. Dharmendra was in love with her and quickly went back to the role of Veeru.

  • The famous overhead tank scene where Veeru threatens Mausi with suicide and Jai attempts at making a proposal of marriage was drawn from a real life incident.

  • Director Manmohan Desai was first approached by the writing duo of 'Javed Akhtar' and Salim Khan with the story for this movie . He was busy with Chacha Bhatija (1977) and could not accept the project.

  • Actor Amjad Khan was almost dropped from the project because scriptwriter 'Javed Akhtar' found his voice too weak for Gabbar Singh's role.

  • This film was directly inspired by the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone. Some critics at the time even began calling it a "curry western".

  • Amitabh Bachchan was almost killed at the end of the movie when a stray bullet from 'Dharmendra' missed him by inches.

  • The train robbery sequence took about 20 days to film on the Mumbai-Pune line, near Panvel.

  • Amjad Khan's calling one of his associates Sambha ("Arre o Sambha', tera kya hoga?") caught the fancy of not just moviegoers, but also producers. So much so that a producer promptly announced a movie titled Sambha.

  • This was the first film in the history of Indian cinema to celebrate silver jubilee (25 weeks) at over a hundred theatres across India.

  • The film was shot extensively in Ramnagaram near Bangalore, India. There are huge rocks of granite in this town which formed the backdrop of Gabbar Singh's hideout. As a mark of respect, the people of Ramnagaram renamed a hamlet in the town as Sippynagar after the director of the movie, Ramesh Sippy.

  • SPOILER: In the original ending, the Thakur killed Gabbar. The Indian Censor Board did not agree with this ending, saying that its vigilante aspect undermined the rule of law and could adversely influence naive young minds. So, a new ending was created that showed the police running in at the last moment, arresting Gabbar, and specifically telling the Thakur that only the law has the right to punish criminals. The original ending was restored in the 204-minute director's cut.

Interesting facts:

Dillagi was supposed to have Karishma Kapoor in place of Urmila Matondkar and the title was initially decided upon as 'London.' But, then Karishma Kapoor walked out of the project following some disagreement between her and the director, Sunny Deol.

This movie was directed by Sunny Deol and was produced by Dharmendra. It was supposed to be the 2nd movie of their production house. The first one was 'Barsaat', the debut vehicle of Bobby Deol and Twinkle Khanna.

The movie also had a guest appearance by Preity Zinta (towards the end of the movie), where she appeared as Bobby Deol's newfound love interest.

Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan

Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan by Mohd Rafi

Inspired by: My Darling Clementine by Freddy Quinn

Film: CID (1956)
Composer: OP Nayyar

Interesting facts:

- CID was really Raj Khosla's breakthough film. Khosla had initially entered the Film Industry with hopes of making it as a playback singer. He however went on to become one of the great directors of Hindi Cinema. He assisted Guru Dutt through the making of Baazi (1951), Jaal (1952) and Baaz (1953) before getting a break with Jaal's producer and making Milap starring Dev Anand and Geeta Bali. The film however failed to create waves but fortunately for Khosla, mentor Guru Dutt was behind him and produced CID for him.

- Waheeda Rehman made a stunning Hindi film debut in the film as a vamp!

- Jaata Kahaan Hai Deewane. The last song in the movie is one of the best songs ever rendered by Geeta Dutt in her unique seductive style but unfortunately, though a big hit musically, the song does not find itself into the film. It is said the censors did not approve showing a CID officer being bewitched by a vamp! There was also objection to the use of the word Fi-Fi (Kuch Mere Dil Mein Fi-Fi, Kuch Tere Dil Mein Fi-Fi...) as being too suggestive!

Yeh Samaa Samaa Hai Yeh Pyaar Ka

Yeh Samaa Samaa Hai Yeh Pyaar Ka by Lata Mangeshkar

Inspired by: Besame Mucho by Luis Miguel

Film: Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965)
Composer: Kalyanji Anandji

Interesting facts:

Brij Katyal's script was turned down by three top producers, including Sholay (1975) creator N.N. Sippy. However, director Suraj Prakash felt it was a beautiful story and accepted it. It went on o become his greatest hit film.

The sequence of Raja pulling his beloved into the train was shot in Bombay Central Train Station. Director Suraj Prakash gave explicit instructions on how and when to pull Nanda into the train. But when the time came, Kapoor followed those directions so well that there were only a few feet left for the platform to end when he pulled her in! Prakash claims the incident was so hair-raising that he'd shut his eyes, convinced that Nanda's end had come.

The original climax from the script had the hero beating up the bad guys in the film. However, director Prakash rejected it, and after an afternoon watching Love in the Afternoon (1957), settled with the hero pulling his beloved into the train taking him back home to Kashmir. This climax was repeated thirty years later in Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995).

While on location in Srinagar, a Lieutenant Colonel from Maharashtra became smitten with Nanda and asked Suraj Prakash to forward a marriage proposal to her mother. Nothing came of it, however.

Director Suraj Prakash and actor Shashi Kapoor made a bet: Prakash said the film would run for 25 weeks and Kapoor, eight weeks. Whoever proved to be right would present the other a suit stitched at Burlington's. Prakash won the bet and presented the suit to Kapoor; however, each proved to be wrong, as the film ran for 50 weeks and celebrated its golden jubilee.

After the Golden Jubilee celebrations, Suraj Prakash asked Brij Katyal what religion Raja belonged to, as it had never been specified and no one had noticed till now. Apparently, all the boatmen in Srinagar were Muslims. The writer was speechless, as this could have been portrayed as a Hindu-Muslim love story. Prakash claims this to be the true climax behind the making of his greatest hit.
